Health Hint # 216
Toxic shock syndrome (TSS) is a potentially fatal illness caused by bacteria. Symptoms are:
High fever
Muscle aches
Vomiting
Diarrhea
Sunburn-like rash
Rapid pulse
Dizziness
Fainting
If you experience these symptoms during your menstrual period (or any other time), act fast: Contact your doctor or go to a hospital emergency room immediately.
The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists recommend that women take the following precautions to prevent TSS.
Use sanitary napkins instead of tampons whenever possible. (And never use tampons if you've experienced TSS in the past.)
Don't use superabsorbent tampons.
Don't use tampons with plastic applicators.
Lubricate the tampon applicator with a water-soluble (nongreasy) lubricant like K-Y Jelly before insertion.
Change tampons and sanitary pads every 4 to 6 hours, or more frequently.
