At menopause, estrogen levels drop. The decline in estrogen production is responsible for atrophic vaginitis, or vaginal dryness. Intercourse may be painful or difficult. Here are some ways to deal with this problem.
- Don't use deodorant soaps or scented products in the vaginal area.
- Use a water-soluble lubricant, such as K-Y Jelly, to facilitate penetration during intercourse. Avoid oils or petroleum-based products--they encourage infection.
- Ask your physician about intravaginal estrogen cream.
- If you still experience pain during intercourse, or if you notice a pink-tinged discharge or
experience burning when you urinate, contact your doctor. You may have an infection.
