Overcoming Impotence

Don R. Powell Ph.D. & American Institute for Preventive Medicine

365 Practical Ways to Feel Better and Live Longer

Health Hint # 241

Just about every man will experience an episode of impotence--failure to achieve or maintain an adequate erection for sexual intercourse--at least once in his life. The cause may be psychological, physical, or a combination of both. Inhibitions, guilt, performance anxiety, and stress can trigger the problem. So can atherosclerosis, hormonal disorders, high blood pressure, diabetes, neurological problems, and certain types of surgery on the genitourinary system. Alcohol and some medications can also produce impotence.

If you have a frequent or ongoing problem with impotence, consult a physician. Physician referral services and hospitals with support groups for impotent men can help you locate a qualified doctor. Your medical history and the results of certain tests can provide important clues to help diagnose the problem and dictate what kind of treatment may help.

  • If the cause is psychological, your doctor may suggest you consult a therapist who specializes in sexual dysfunction.
  • If you have a hormonal disorder, your doctor may prescribe hormone injections or pills.
  • Some men require surgery to restore sexual function. A device known as a penile implant, for instance, can help produce erections.

Avoid over-the-counter products like vitamins, creams, exercises, and various gadgets marketed as cures for impotence. They don't work.
