English name: Epidemics Clearing and Toxin Dispelling Decoction
Component: Radix Rehmanniae Glutinosae(sheng di huang), Rhizoma Coptidis(huang lian), Radix Scutellariae(huang qin), Cortex Moutan Radicis(dan pi), Gypsum(shi gao), Fructus Gardeniae Jasminoidis(zhi zi), Radix Flycyrrhizae Uralensis(gan cao), Herba Lophatheri Gracilis(zhu ye), Cornu Rhinoceri(xi jiao), Fructus Forsythiae Suspensae(lian qiao), Radix Anemarrhenae Asphodeloidis(zhi mu), Radix Paeoniae(bai shao), Radix Platycodi Grandiflori(jie geng)
Function: Clears heat, relieves toxicity, cools the blood and drains fire.
Clinic Usage: This formula is for treatment of the severe fire in the qi and blood. It is contracted from the heat toxin of epidemics which manifests internally and externally. Symptoms include intense fever, strong thirst, severe and throbbing headache, dry heaves, extreme irritability and delirium. There may also be rash, blood expectoration, nosebleed, convulsion, cold extremities, a large, rapid pulse and a dark-red tongue with dark, scorched lips.
Cautions: Modern practitioners often use this formula for disorders such as meningitis, encephalitis and septicemia of various origins.
