English name: Licorice root
Where grown: North China.
Source: Dried rhizome of Glycyrrhiza uralensis Fisch.
Ingredients: Uralenic acid, Glycyrrhizic acid, Licoricone, Isoliquiritin, Neoisoliquiritin, Liquoric acid, Glycyrrhizin, Glycyrrhetol, Rhamnoliquiritin, Liquiritic acid, Formononetic, 18-ß-Glycyrrhetinic acid, Glabrene
Pharmacological effect: 1) The herbal extract has an inhibiting effect on gastric juice secretion. It can also relieve convulsion and heal ulcers. 2) The ingredient glycyrrhizin has the effect similar to adreno-cortical function. It may alleviate coughing and has anti-viral, anti-microbial and anti-anaphylactic properties.
Properties: Sweet, neutral
Channels entered: Heart, lung, spleen, stomach
Function: Nourishes spleen and qi, coordinates different drug properties, clears heat, relieves toxicity, alleviates pain, moistens lung and alleviates coughing.
Major Clinic Usage: For stomach or spleen deficiency, abdominal pain, loose stool, carbuncles, skin lesions, swollen, painful throat, consumptive lung disease, coughing, palpitations and epilepsy. It can also coordinate different properties of a prescription.
Cautions: Do not use with Radix Euphorbiae seu Knoxiae(jing da ji), Flos Daphnes Genkwa(yuan hua), or Radix Euphorbiae Kansui(gan sui).
Usage and Dosage: 1.5~9g
Storage: Store in a dry place. Protect from worm infestation.
