Where grown: Southwest China.
Source: Dried rhizome of Ligusticum chuanxiong Hort.
Ingredients: Ligustilide, Butylphthalide, Butylidenphthalide
Pharmacological effect: 1) Convulsion controlling effect - active ingredients ligustilide and Butylidenphthalide can relax smooth muscles. 2) Sedative effect - Oral ingestion of the herbal extract for seven consecutive days can extend sleeping induced by hexobarbital and inhibit the increased exercise amount induced by methamphetamine in mice. 3) Blood vessel dilation effect - the herbal extract can lower blood pressure and increase the blood flow in coronary vessels and lower limbs. 4) Skin fungus resistant effect - butylphthalide is proved to be able to prevent skin fungus.
Properties: Acrid, warm
Channels entered: Liver, gallbladder, heart
Function: Promotes movement of qi, dispels stasis and wind, relieves pain, regulates qi, invigorates blood, expels pus, regenerates tissue and dries dampness. This herb is frequently used to relieve pain.
Major Clinic Usage: For headache, dizziness, distended chest, spasms, arthritis due to cold, weak lower back and legs, abdominal pain due to cold, diarrhea, irregular menstruation, carbuncles and swellings.
Cautions: Contraindicated in cases of yin deficiency with strong fire signs or qi deficiency.
Usage and Dosage: 3~9g
Storage: Store in a cool, dry place. Protect from worm infestation.
