English name: Great burdock fruit, arctium
Where grown: Throughout China. Mostly cultivated.
Source: The dried, ripe fruit of Arctium Lappa L.
Ingredients: Arctiin, l-arctigenin, matairesinol, lappaol A, lappaol B2, isoarctignin and fatty oils.
Pharmacological effect: 1) Antibiotic effect: water-prepared Fructus Arctii Lappae(niu bang zi) has shown a significant effect in vitro inhibition. 2) Endocrine effect: the herb extract showed a hypoglycemic effect in large white mice. It also showed significant tolerance for carbohydrate. 3) Other side effects: large doses of arctiin may cause cramps in frogs, small white mice and rabbits. It may also cause feeble breathing, inability to control voluntary muscles and unconsciousness.
Properties: Acrid, bitter, cold
Channels entered: Lung, stomach
Function: Releases heat, disperses clumps, dispels wind-heat, expands the lungs, vents rashes, reduces edema and relieves toxicity.
Major Clinic Usage: For externally contracted wind-heat, coughing, rashes that do not surface evenly, measles, swollen and sore throat, carbuncles and mumps.
Cautions: This herb moistens the intestines. It is contraindicated in cases of qi deficiency and diarrhea.
Usage and Dosage: 6~12g
Storage: Store in a cool, well-ventilated place. Protect from worm infestation.
