English name: Aromatic madder, elsholtzia
Where grown: Throughout China.
Source: The dried whole leaf (with flowers and fruits) of Elsholtzia ciliata (Thunb.) Hyland and its family.
Ingredients: Elsholfzia Ketone, Acetophenone, Isobutylis-ovaleriate, Naginata Ketone, Linalool.
Properties: Acrid, slightly warm
Channels entered: Lung, stomach
Function: Induces sweating, expels summer heat, transforms dampness, promotes urination, harmonizes the middle burner and warms stomach.
Major Clinic Usage: For summer heat symptoms, headache, sweating and aversion to cold, or absence of sweat, body ache, vomiting, diarrhea, distended chest, abdominal pain, edema and beriberi. With Herba Agastaches seu Pogostemi(huo xiang), Semen Dolichoris Lablab(bian dou), or Cortex Magnoliae Officinalis(hou po) for treatment of damp summer heat symptoms.
Cautions: Contraindicated in cases of yin or qi deficiency.
Usage and Dosage: 3~9g
Storage: Store in a cool, dry place.
