English name: Benzoin
Where grown: Southeast Asia and south China.
Source: Dried resin of Styrax benzoin Dryand.
Ingredients: Benzoic acid
Pharmacological effect: Steamed vapor of the herb can stimulate respiratory tract and increase its secretion. Can be used for treatment of bronchitis to dispel phlegm. Can also be used as an antiseptic.
Properties: Acrid, bitter, neutral
Channels entered: Spleen, heart
Function: Opens orifices, dispels filth, warms kidney and promotes movement of qi.
Major Clinic Usage: For sudden loss of consciousness, pain in the heart and chest, postpartum blood stasis, children's abdominal pain, convulsions, traumatic injuries, ulcers and filthy wounds.
Cautions: Use with caution for yin deficiency with strong fire signs.
Usage and Dosage: 0.6~1.5g. Generally in pills and powders.
Storage: Store in a cool, dry place.
