English name: Finger citron fruit
Where grown: In south China.
Source: The dried fruit of Citrus medica L. var. sarcodactylis.
Ingredients: Volatile oil.
Pharmacological effect: 1) Alleviate pain of distended chest and abdomen. It also helps to relax the smooth muscle of gastrointestinal system, gall bladder, and bronchi. 2) Improves the symptoms of distended chest, rib cage, or breasts caused by deficient liver yin. It also treats painful or irregular menstruation. 3) In animal experiments, it constrains heart and lowers blood pressure.
Properties: Bitter, acrid, warm
Channels entered: Liver, spleen, stomach, lung
Function: Spreads and regulates the liver qi, harmonizes the middle burner and transforms phlegm.
Major Clinic Usage: For distended, painful chest and rib cage caused by stagnant liver qi, distended breasts, stomachache, coughing and copious sputum.
Cautions: Use with caution in cases of yin deficiency with internally ascending fire or lack of the qi stagnancy symptoms.
Usage and Dosage: 3~10g
Storage: Store in a cool, dry place. Avoid dampness and infestation by worms.
