English name: Costus root, aucklandia
Where grown: India and southwest China.
Source: The dried root of Saussurea lappa CLARKE.
Ingredients: Castunolide, Dehydrocostus lactone, Costene, ß-Elemene, ß-Selinene, Dihydrocostunolide, Saussurea lactone, Friedelin, terpenoids
Properties: Acrid, bitter, warm
Channels entered: Spleen, stomach, large intestine, gallbladder
Function: Strengthens spleen, harmonizes stomach, spreads the liver qi, releases constraints, promotes movement of qi and alleviates pain.
Major Clinic Usage: For distended, painful chest and abdomen, diarrhea, tenesmus, food stagnation due to indigestion and lack of appetite. Toast the herb to increase its absorbent properties and can be used for treatment of diarrhea and abdominal pain.
Cautions: Contraindicated for yin deficiency presenting red tongue.
Usage and Dosage: 1.5~6g
Storage: Store in a cool, dry, tightly sealed container. Avoid dampness.
