Li Qi Yao
 --> yan hu suo
Pin-yin: yan hu suo
English name: Corydalis rhizome
Where grown: In Zhejiang, Jiangsu, Shangdong and Hebei areas of China.
Source: The dried rhizome of Corydalis yanhusuo W. T. WAN and its family.
Ingredients: Corybulbine, Corydaline, Tetrahydropalmatine, Cavidine, Protopine, Canadine
Pharmacological effect: 1) Analgesic and sedative effect: ingredient tetrahydropalmatine provides a very strong analgesic effect, although less powerful than morphine. It also extends sleeping time induced by hexobarbital. The ingredient can constrain spontaneous activities of small white mice and the waking response of rabbits' brains. 2) Effect on the gastrointestinal system: the herb preparations have a spasm-constraint effect on small intestine and trachea relaxation in mice like that of papaverine. The herb also reduces gastric secretions significantly due to dehydrocorydaline. It appears not to have any effect on the parasympathetic nervous system, but may be related to catecholamine. Dehydrocorydaline also has an ulcer-inhibiting effect in animal experiments. 3) Effect on blood pressure: dehydrocorydaline may temporarily lower animals’ blood pressure. The effect appears to be unrelated to that of acetylcholine, adrenaline or nicotine.
Properties: Acrid, bitter, warm
Channels entered: Liver, spleen
Function: Invigorates blood, dissipates clumps, promotes movement of qi and alleviates pain. This is one major herb for blood circulation and qi promotion.
Major Clinic Usage: For chest and abdominal pain, irregular menstruation, heavy internal blood discharge, vaginal discharge, postpartum blood stasis, and pain due to traumatic injury.
Cautions: The acrid, dry, bitter and warm nature of the herb promotes heat. Use with caution in cases of excessive internal heat or with symptoms of red-tongued and insufficient saliva.
Usage and Dosage: 3~9g. If use as an intake powder, 1.5~3g per dose.
Storage: Store in a dry place. Protect from worm infestation.
