Where grown: Throughout China.
Source: Dried root of Sophora flavescens AIT.
Ingredients: Matrine, Oxymatrine, Sophoranol, Sophocarpine, Baptifoline, Anagyrine, Kurarinol, Neokurarinol
Pharmacological effect: 1) Ulcer-preventive effect: the herbal extract, matrine and oxymatrine have significant preventive effect on gastric ulcer in mice. 2) Effect on central nervous system: matrine has treatment effect on skeletal muscle similar to that of curare. It can also have anti-trichomonal property. 3) Flavanones can reduce ventricular fibrillation induced by chloroform in mice. It can also prevent irregular pulse induced by chloroform, adrenaline or aconitine in rabbits and mice.
Properties: Bitter, cold
Channels entered: Heart, liver, stomach, bladder, large intestine
Function: Opens the orifices, generates saliva, dries dampness, clears heat, nourishes liver and gall, calms internal organs and is antiseptic.
Major Clinic Usage: For jaundice, alcoholism, leukorrhea, hematochezia, bleeding hemorrhoids, prolapsed rectum, scrofula, burns, carbuncles and scabies.
Cautions: Do not use with Radix et Rhizoma Veratri(li lu).
Usage and Dosage: 4.5~9g. Proper amount for external use. Use decoctions to rinse wounds.
Storage: Store in a dry place. Protect from mold and worm infestation.
