English name: Houttuynia
Where grown: South China.
Source: Whole plant of Houtuynia cordata Thunb.
Ingredients: Volatile oil, Methyl-n-nonylketone, Myrcene
Pharmacological effect: Has antiseptic, anti-viral, diuretic and analgesic properties.
Properties: Acrid, slightly cold
Channels entered: Lung
Function: Clears heat, relieves toxicity, dispels pus and has diuretic properties.
Major Clinic Usage: For blood expectoration with pus due to pulmonary abscess, expectoration of phlegm with pus, ulcers due to toxic heat, strangury due to heat and painful or difficult urination.
Usage and Dosage: 15~25g. Do not cook for extended time. Double the dosage if fresh herb is used. Decoct with water or extract the juice. Use proper amount for external application. Smash the herb then apply to wounds or rinse the wounds with herb decoctions.
Storage: Store in a cool, dry place.
