English name: Anemarrhena rhizome
Where grown: North and northeast China.
Source: Dried rhizome of Anemarrhena aspodeloidea Bge..
Ingredients: Timosaponin A1, A2, A3,A4,B1,B2,A-I, A-III, Xanthone C-glycoside, Mangiferin
Pharmacological effect: 1) Effect of lowering blood sugar: oral ingestion of the watery extract has the effect of lowering blood pressure in lab animals. These animals presenting glycosuria were either induced by allozane or had insulin antiserotonin. It can also reduce ketone in the blood in mice. Alcoholic extract does not have such effects. 2) Antipyrectic effect: reduces fever induced by Bacillus coli in rabbits. 3) Others: can lower blood pressure, paralyze respiratory central system, inhibit heart functioning, is antiseptic and has hemolysis effect on red blood cells.
Properties: Bitter, sweet, cold
Channels entered: Lungs, stomach, kidney
Function: Nourishes yin, diminishes fire, moistens intestines and nourishes fluids in kidneys.
Major Clinic Usage: For heat in the middle burner, thirst, edema, hectic, tidal fever, impaired lungs due to overstrain and excessive heat, coughing due to negative qi, dysentery, pain in the lower back and constipation.
Cautions: Contraindicated in cases of weak digestion system and diarrhea symptoms.
Usage and Dosage: 6~12g
Storage: Store in a dry, well-ventilated place. Prevent dampness.
