English name: Agkistrodon
Where grown: South China.
Source: Dried body of Agkistrodon acutus (Guenther) with inner organs removed.
Properties: Sweet, salty, warm, toxic
Channels entered: Liver
Function: Dispels wind-dampness, heals numbness and weakness in the limbs and calms convulsions.
Major Clinic Usage: 1) For treatment of rash and scabies, pain in the joints, hemiplegia, facial paralysis, muscle spasm, tetanus and childhood convulsions. Use 0.8~1.5g per dose. Contraindicated in cases of blood deficiency and wind symptoms. Use with Rhizoma et Radix Notopterygii(qiang huo), Radix Angelicae Sinensis(dang gui), Radix Ledebouriellae Divaricatae(fang feng), Rhizoma Gastrodiae Elatae(tian ma), Radix Gentianae Qingjiao(qin jiao), Cortex Acanthopanacis Gracilistyli Radicis(wu jia pi) and the wine soaked with Agkistrodon for stiffness and pain due to wind-dampness, hemiplegia, facial paralysis, numbness of the skin, joint pain, spasm and convulsion. Use with Zaocys Dhumnades(wu she), Scolopendra Subspinipes(wu gong) for tetanus and body stiffness. 2) Calms convulsions: for treatment of leprosy, arthralgia and malignant boils.
Cautions: Contraindicated in case of yin deficiency with internal heat symptoms.
Usage and Dosage: 3~10g. 1~1.5g is used in powders.
Storage: Store in lime urns with xanthoxylon seeds. Protect from worm infestation.
