English name: Myrobalan fruit
Where grown: West and south China.
Source: Dried fruit of Terminalia chebula RETZ.
Ingredients: D-galacturonic acid, Xylose, anthraquinone derivatives, Terchebin, Sennoside A, Chebulinic acid, Chebulagic acid, Tannic acid
Properties: Bland, bitter, sour, astringent
Channels entered: Lungs, large intestine
Function: Binds intestines to stop diarrhea, constrains leakage of lung qi and directs qi to move downward.
Cautions: Contraindicated in cases of coughing due to cold deficiency.
Major Clinic Usage: For treatment of phlegm due to heat, wheezing, coughing, obstruction of phlegm, scrofula and gonorrhea.
Usage and Dosage: 3~10g. Use raw for chronic cough and loss of voice, roasted for chronic diarrhea and dysenteric disorders.
Storage: Store in a dry place.
