English name: White mustard seed
Where grown: Throughout China.
Source: Dried, ripe seed of Brassica alba (L.) Boiss.
Ingredients: Sinalbin, Myrosin, Sinapine
Pharmacological effect: The solution of sinalbin with water contains volatile oil.
Properties: Acrid, warm
Channels entered: Lung
Function: Warms and transforms phlegm, reduces carbuncles, alleviates pain, strengthens stomach, regulates qi and eliminates phlegm.
Major Clinic Usage: For phlegm retention, coughing, wheezing, distended chest and rib cage, numb and painful limbs, beriberi, toxic swellings, and traumatic injuries due to falling or fracture.
Cautions: Contraindicated in cases of coughing due to yin deficiency or yin deficiency with strong fire signs.
Usage and Dosage: 3~10g. For external use, mix powdered herb with vinegar then apply to wounds.
Storage: Store in a dry place.
