English name: Descurainia seed
Where grown: North and northeast China.
Source: Dried seed of Lepidium apetalum Willd.
Ingredients: Fatty oil, protein, sugar
Properties: Acrid, bitter, strong cold
Channels entered: Lung, bladder
Function: Drains lung qi, alleviates water retention, reduces edema, dispels phlegm, alleviates coughing, calms wheezing, drains dampness in lung and bladder.
Major Clinic Usage: For wheezing due to irregular lung qi, coughing due to phlegm retention, edema and distention. (Use sweet seeds for wheezing due to heat in lung, and bitter ones to drain water.)
Cautions: Contraindicated in cases of coughing and wheezing due to lung deficiency, or distended, deficient spleen.
Usage and Dosage: 3~9g. Place in a cheesecloth bag before decocting.
Storage: Store in a dry, well-ventilated place. Avoid dampness and infestation by worms.
