English name:	Croton seed

Where grown:	South China.

Source:	The dried rhizome of Croton tiglium L.
Ingredients:	Phorbol, ß-Sitosterol
Pharmacological effect:	1) Effect on the digestive system: injection of Fructus Crotonis(ba dou) oil stimulates peristalsis of small intestine in dogs and rabbits. Injection of a large dosage presents a stimulation effect first, then replaced by inhibition. 2) Effect on genital system: oral ingestion of Fructus Crotonis(ba dou) oil makes rabbits' uterus congestive and stimulates mature follicles to develop and grow.

Properties:	Acrid, hot, toxic

Channels entered:	Stomach, large intestine

Function:	Purges cold accumulation, expels stasis, dispels clogged phlegm, unblocks flow of water and kills parasites.

Major Clinic Usage:	For accumulated and stagnant cold, distended, painful abdomen, edema, and external use to heal abscesses and ulcers.
Cautions:	Contraindicated during pregnancy. Do not use with Semen Pharbitidis(qian niu zi).

Usage and Dosage:	6~12g

Storage:	This herb is highly toxic. It should be used and stored with great caution. Store in a cool, dry place. For herb prepared in its defatted form, store in a lime urn.
